Summer street — tērbata

2020

The Summer Street Tērbata project was developed during the COVID-19 pandemic, when Riga’s central area experienced decreased activity and many retail spaces were left empty. The initiative aimed to temporarily transform a car-dominated street into a pedestrian-friendly environment that would reactivate public life and support local vitality.

The design concept focused on creating a cohesive spatial identity through large-scale street graphics and environmental elements. Playful visual patterns were integrated with urban furniture and planters to create ‘islands’ for recreation. The visual language balanced functionality and optimism, using color and form to signal a positive shift in the use of public space.

The project demonstrated how graphic design can contribute to urban revitalization, helping to shape atmosphere and collective experience within temporary city interventions. Project was initiated by Riga City Council and curated by Renāte Lagstiņa.
